1、農作物秸稈量大，覆蓋面廣，燃料來源充足。2、秸稈含硫量很低。國際能源機構的有關研究表明，秸稈的平均含硫量只有千分之3.8，而煤的平均含硫量約達百分之一。且低溫燃燒產生的氮氧化物較少，所以除塵后的煙氣不進行脫硫，煙氣可直接通過煙囪排入大氣。丹麥等國家的運行試驗表明秸稈鍋爐經除塵后的煙氣不加其他凈化措施完全能夠滿足環保要求。所以秸稈發電不僅具有較好的經濟效益，還有良好的生態效益和社會效益。3、各類作物秸稈發熱量略有區別，但經測定，秸稈熱值約為15000KJ/Kg，相當于標準煤的50%。其中麥秸稈、玉米秸稈的發熱量在農作物秸稈中為最小，低位發熱量也有14.4MJ/kg，相當0.492kg標準煤。使用秸稈發電，可降低煤炭消耗。
